The purpose of printing booklets is quite different from printing other types of print medias because booklets are printed in a form of a small book that can display more information than other types of print medias such as leaflets, flyers, or posters. There are also minor differences in composition which often confuses customers, and raises questions every time they print booklets. For example, what type of paper should they use to print the cover page? What is the binding that fits with their needs?
So today, Gogoprint will recommend you "5 Things You Should Know Before Printing Booklets", so that your printing design can meet your needs and can be used with the target audience.
1. The Size of Booklets
In general, to select the size of booklets, you should choose the size based on the usage and the amount of information. For customers who require a relatively large booklet and want to put a lot of details but do not want the booklet to thick, choose the DIN A4 paper (A4 size). It has a standard size and is widely used. However, for those who want to make small booklets that are easy to carry and do not want to put a lot of information, choose the paper size of DIN A6 (10.5 x 14.8 cm), which is relatively small. So, choosing your booklets’ size should take into account the usage and amount of information you want to put on the printed media. Otherwise, the composition of your booklets will be unbalanced and unprofessional.
2. The Cover and The Content Paper
In terms of selecting paper type, it will be divided into two parts. The first part is the cover paper. You should use thick paper that is more durable than the paper used for the content of the booklets since the cover is used to protect the internal content. Also, since it is the first thing that the customers see,it should have a professional image as well. Therefore, we recommend using the 260g paper because it meets the requirements and is not too expensive. The second part is the content paper. We recommend using the 128g art paper because it has a good thickness level and it is cheap.
3. The Colors
Choosing the colors to be used in your booklets should be consistent with the brand's positioning and image. For example, if your brand has a professional image and your target audiences are “Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises” (SMEs) or “Business-to-Business” (B2B) companies, you should choose colors that are not too prominent, such as white, gray, brown or black. However, if your brand focuses on “Business-to-Consumers” (B2C) customers or having a fun or a lively image, you should use bright colors such as pink, blue, or yellow to make your brand looks more colorful. Anyway, before printing any publications, make sure that you set the colors in your artworks to CMYK so that the color scheme matches with your needs.
4. The Coating
Glossy lamination coating on the cover can make your booklets look more expensive, luxurious, and valuable. It also helps to create a professional image for your brand because customers will see that your brand is ready to invest and produce only the best quality. This will make your customers believe that your brand is ready to take care of them. There are two types of coating; glossy lamination and matte lamination. Choose the right type of lamination based on how you want your booklets to look like.
5. The Binding
There are many types of binding. The choice depends on many factors. In general, customers usually opt for saddle-stitching. This is to sew both the cover paper and the paper inside together. The papers are folded in half and then sewed at the corner of the roof at the fold. This type of binding is suitable for booklets that are not very thick. If the booklets are too thick, the wire-o-binding method should be used instead. A loop wire will be inserted into holes that have been punched on the side of the booklets to bind each booklet together. For this type of binding, leave at least 1 cm of space at the side/top of the artwork to prevent it from being damaged after binding.
